名人教英文：「蚕虫」师爷
政治化妆师一词，源自英文的spin doctor，直译是「编织医生」，职责似我们口中的「师爷」，再加点贬意，就是「蚕虫师爷」。今亦有叫spin master，晋升至「大师」级。
spin doctor是美国近代语，但spin，就像说「编织」故事、谎言，「编故事」等，有 spiders spin webs，蜘蛛织网；及silkworms spin cocoons，蚕虫织茧的景象，在英文中一直可解做把人、事、物搞作搞作，做好门面工夫，以令之对己方有利。
the report is not favourable? never mind. spin it!
报告对我们不利？不要紧。将之化一化妆！
the boss wants the press release spin doctored.
老板要新闻稿化一化妆。
the chief executive is hiring a new information coordinator, or a spin doctor.
特首要请一个新的新闻统筹专员，或叫政治化妆师。
spin亦解扭转、旋转。就上述官职的新闻，《英文虎报》有一条出色的玩字标题：democrats in spin over job claim.（就有人声称）已得职位，民主派中人只觉晕（而作呕）。
也就看到spin及做spin工夫的人，通常与政治及新闻挂钩。美国历史上，给水门事件丑闻拉下马的尼克逊总统，就话说曾吐这句话：
"you want the spin, or the truth?" 「你要修饰过的一套，还是真相？」
这款spin，政治人一样可掉过头来指摘传媒。尼克逊肯定讲过以下这句：
"i cannot wait to see how the washington post spins that one tomorrow."「我等不及看《华盛顿邮报》明天就这个怎样作嘢。」
1980年代是美国电视新闻的黄金岁月，荧幕上渴求政治人的sound bites（精警、吸引之语），就出现了a new class of publicist，新一种发放信息公关专家。1984年10月，spin doctor 一词正式在《纽约时报》诞生：
"a dozen men in good suits and women in silk dresses will circulate smoothly among the reporters, spouting confident opinions. they won't be just press agents trying to impart a favourable spin to a routine release. they'll be the spin doctors..." 「十多个衣着光鲜的男女，在记者群中周旋讲好话。他们并非净为新闻稿化个好妆，他们是政治化妆/整容医生……」
传统英文说spin a yarn，指胡吹、「作大」的故事，现代英文就有spin the truth，为真相化妆。也即是说，spin这字给人的感觉，负面居多。
