名人教英文：要识得 -ling -ling
都听过「太子党」吧，英文叫princeling(s)，是prince加ling，即「小王子」。英文用语，在一个字后面加 -ling，是指那个字所代表事物的年轻版、或粗劣版。
美国《华尔街日报》的财经新闻，曾有这么一句：for banks, the chinese "princeling" stock has fallen. 对银行来说，那只中国「太子党」的股票已失宠了。
太子党，顾名思义，有世袭的意思，所以西式叫法，另有crown prince party。 party，固然是党；而 crown prince，是皇室继承人、皇太子。用作比喻，指一个人prepared or favoured to fill a prospective position，已准备好或受钦点也似去接任一个衔头、地位。

英文的princeling、小王子，相对地听起来，彷佛正面得多。因为用中文解读，小王子容易令我们联想世界知名的法国小小说the little prince，中译不也就是《小王子》。这里要注意的，是英文在一个字后面加 -ling，往往且带侮辱：
under + ling = underling，类似我们的「跟班、马仔、傍友」。字典解说为 (1) an insulting word for someone who is less important or has lower status in an organisation than someone else. 颇带贬意地指在一个组织架构中，相对地不重要或地位低之人。(2) a person of low rank who works for a more powerful person. 在重要人物身边为之卖力者。
所以要小心，日常口语说「peter系under大老板嘅」，没有问题。但说「peter是大老板的underling」，因为有跟班之类的味道，就容易得罪人了。
hire + ling = hireling，字面意思是「受雇的小人物」。跟underling不同的，是underling一般指全职雇员，做的是长期服务；但hireling可指兼职、play for pay，逐单计地「收钱演出」，尤指打手、杀手一类的角色。字典解释(1) one who is willing to perform for a fee tasks considered menial or offensive, with little to no concern for the value of the work. 一个纯粹收酬办事的人，亦不顾办的事有否意义价值。(2) one who is paid for a job that is considered morally wrong. 一个为收钱而去承担一项给视为道德上有错失任务的人。
也就是说，「网上五毛」者，亦可叫online hirelings。当然，确也有ling字尾的字，实实在在一点负面意思都没有，包括：
duckling，小鸭子。虽然大多数人会立刻想到the ugly duckling，安徒生童话中丑小鸭变天鹅的故事。
sibling，兄弟姊妹的统称。这个字的常用组词，指的却也是坏事：sibling rivalry，兄弟姊妹间的比并之心、兄弟阋墙。例句：
there is always sibling rivalry in that family.
