to blow one's money
francisco: have you heard about mel's big win?
jack: no, but i know he's a betting man. was it at the horse races?
francisco: that's right. he won $2,000 on the very last race.
jack: that must have been his biggest win ever.
francisco: and do you know what he did with it?
jack: if he had any sense, he would have put it in the bank.
francisco: he didn't. he blew the lot on a party for his pals at the golf club.
jack: what a waste! i bet they wouldn't do the same for him.
he blew the lot on a party for his pals的blew字,是俚语用法,指「胡乱花钱」。这个blow是及物动词(transitive verb),须和受词(object)连用,常见于to blow something on something这句式,例如﹕(1) he has blown all his money on model aeroplanes(他把钱都花在模型飞机上)。(2) she blew $3 million in less than one year(她不到一年,就花了三百万元)。
此外,陌生人交谈,不知对方名字,男性之间也可用pal互相称呼,例如﹕"is the science museum far from here?" "no, pal, not at all."(「科学博物馆离这里很远吗?」「不远,老兄,一点都不远。」)
所以,说「就某事和人家打赌」,英文会用bet字,不用gamble;说人家以赌徒心理买卖股票,则会用gamble一字,不用bet,例如﹕(1) i'll bet you ten dollars that he won't resign.(我可以和你打赌十元,他不会辞职)。(2) he lost all his money gambling on the stock market(他在股票市场上,输光了钱)。把a betting man改为a gambling man,就有非议其好赌的意思。
