francisco: that's right. he won $2,000 on the very last race.

he blew the lot on a party for his pals的blew字，是俚语用法，指「胡乱花钱」。这个blow是及物动词（transitive verb），须和受词（object）连用，常见于to blow something on something这句式，例如﹕(1) he has blown all his money on model aeroplanes（他把钱都花在模型飞机上）。(2) she blew $3 million in less than one year（她不到一年，就花了三百万元）。
pal当然是「朋友」。这个字出自英国吉卜赛人（gypsy）用语，原义是「兄弟」，现指「朋友」，一般用于口语。此外，陌生人交谈，不知对方名字，男性之间也可用pal互相称呼，例如﹕"is the science museum far from here?" "no, pal, not at all."（「科学博物馆离这里很远吗？」「不远，老兄，一点都不远。」）
bet和gamble都是指「赌博」，但两字用法有点不同。gamble带贬义，有「冒很大风险」的意思，bet则没有这贬义。所以，说「就某事和人家打赌」，英文会用bet字，不用gamble；说人家以赌徒心理买卖股票，则会用gamble一字，不用bet，例如﹕(1) i'll bet you ten dollars that he won't resign.（我可以和你打赌十元，他不会辞职）。(2) he lost all his money gambling on the stock market（他在股票市场上，输光了钱）。把a betting man改为a gambling man，就有非议其好赌的意思。
