名人教英文：free gift有什么不对？
即使是以英语为母语的人，也会犯上用语重复（redundancies）的错误。最常见的例子莫过于free gift ——既然是gift（礼物），当然是free（免费），说gift就可以。
past history的past，extra bonus的extra，以及unexpected surprise的unexpected，同样应该删去，因为history即关于过去的事情（past events），bonus即额外的奖赏（extra reward），surprise即意料之外的事件（unexpected occurrence）。
fellow classmates、fellow schoolmates、fellow colleagues及fellow co-workers的fellow也是画蛇添足。fellow解作「同伴的」，例如多届美国总统都爱称呼国民作my fellow citizens。不过，以-mate结尾和以co-开头的名词本身已经有「同伴」的含义，classmates和schoolmates即fellow students，colleagues和co-workers即fellow workers，所以不用再加fellow。
又例如动词return (back)、penetrate (through)、progress (forward)、connect (together)及prepare (ahead)，括号内的介词都不必要。
用语重复，往往是因为没有注意缩写的意思，例如：please rsvp、pin number和atm machine。
rsvp是法文répondez s'il vous plait的缩写，répondez s'il vous plait英译为respond please，所以rsvp前后都不应该加please。
pin的全称为personal identification number（个人标识号），所以pin number的number是多余的。
atm即automated teller machine（自动柜员机）。如果说atm machine，就等于说"automated teller machine machine"了。
另外，the reason... is because... 这个说法虽然常见，但可免则免。reason和because两者只应选其一。例如：
