77. 玩轮盘和纸牌
凭影响力或狡狯手段纵横捭阖，英文叫做to wheel and deal。这个词是怎么来的呢？
按赌场里有赌钱用的轮盘（the roulette wheel），又有负责发牌的庄家（dealer）。在轮盘上或牌桌上放下大笔赌注的赌徒，给人叫做wheeler-dealer。这些赌徒靠运气、技巧赢钱，一切尚然都是着眼于私利。所以，人们现在用这个字来指运用权力、手段达到目的的政客、商家等，例如：a typical wheeler-dealer, he got the contract with the help of influential friends in business（他藉着商界朋友的影响力），取得了合约，是个典型的有办法家伙）。
wheeler-dealer的所作所为，则叫做wheeling and dealing，例如：his election to the urban council involved a lot of wheeling and dealing（他是用了很多手段，才获选为市政局议员的）。
