75. 出钱点唱
古时我国有乐妓,不少文人趋之若鹜,例如唐朝白居易和元稹都跟一个叫做玲珑的歌妓相好,元稹还有诗叫白居易「休遣玲珑唱我诗」。当然,白居易只要舍得出钱,要玲珑唱甚么歌都可以,元稹管不着。
在西方,卖唱人也是任顾客点唱的,所以,英国有句谚语:he who pays the piper may call the tune(谁付钱给吹笛人,谁就可以点曲子)。这句谚语,现在常常给分做两截:第一截pay the piper,引伸为「负担费用」或「承担责任」;第二截call the tune,引伸为「居于命令地位」,例如:
she did not take heed of the doctor's advice. eventually, she had to pay the piper and went down with tuberculosis. (她不听医生劝告,最后自食其果,染上了肺痨病。)
as chairman of the committee, he called the tune. (他是委员会主席,一切要听他的。)
