68. 天上的馅饼
孔子有句名言：「口惠而实不至，怨灾及其身，是故君子与其有诺责也，宁有已怨（与其因随便许诺而受责，不如不随便许诺而给埋怨）。」口惠对人没有好处；人们重视的是实惠。二十世纪初，美国劳工领袖兼作曲家贺尔（joe hill）就写过一首歌《傅教士和奴隶》（the preacher and the slave），模仿伪善者的「口惠」：you will eat, by and by'/in the glorious land above the sky!/work and pray'/live on hay'/you'll get pie in the sky when you die!（你会有得吃，不久就会有得吃，在天上荣光照耀的地方吃啊！工作吧，祈祷吧，吃干草吧，你死了就会有天上的馅饼吃了！）
跟中国人说的「画地为饼」一样，pie in the sky（天上的馅饼）是不切实际的。所以，英语国家的人都用这成语来说不会兑现的承诺或不能实现的希望，例如：his expectations are just pie in the sky（他的期望是不可能实现的）。
