62. 古英语
gather ye rosebuds while ye may这句成语，出自to the virgins一诗，上文谈过了；诗句中的ye字是甚么意思呢？这里不妨谈谈。
按古时英语说「你」，用thou字；说「你们」，用ye字。ye fools! 即是「你们这些蠢材！」现代英语用you字代替了thou、ye，但这两个古字在一些成语里给保存下来了，gather ye rosebuds while ye may就是例子。
又gather ye rosebuds while ye may下面那句old time is still a-flying，句中的a-flying是甚么意思呢？按从前英文会在动词或现在分词（present participle）之前加上a-，表示一个动作正在进行。一首英国儿歌说father's gone a-hunting，就是说「爸爸去打猎了」。
这个a-的用法，在现代英语里有时还是可以见到的。
