59. 铁拳
鸟兽作战，必须有爪牙；国家作战，也必须有爪牙——《汉书‧李广传》就有「将军者，国之爪牙也」这个说法。
国家的武装力量，西方人一般都不会比喻做爪牙。他们有另一个比喻：mailed fist（铁拳）。
按mail除了解作「邮件」、「邮寄」，还可解作「锁子铠甲」。西方中古时代武士的锁子铠，包括一双铁手套（gauntlets）；mailed fist就是指戴着铁手套的拳头。一八九七年十二月，德国国王威廉二世（william ii）出发去远东之前，对臣僚说：should anyone essay to detract from our rights or to injure us, then up and at him with your mailed fist（谁想侵犯我们的权利或者损害我们，就用武力对付他吧）。从此，mailed fist一词不胫而走，成了「武力」、「暴力」或「威逼手段」的代名词，例如：woe to the government that uses its mailed fist against its own people!（用铁拳对付百姓的政府，不会有好结果的。）
