27. 紧要关头
诸葛亮在《出师表》里说：「今天下三分，益州疲敝，此诚危急存亡之秋也。」这段话可以这样译做英文：now that the country is split into three parts and our yi district is impoverished, the moment of truth is staring us in the face。为甚么这里把「危急存亡之秋」译做moment of truth呢？
按moment of truth一词出自西班牙斗牛场：斗牛士向牛刺出致命一剑的一刻，叫做moment of truth。这是生死、成败攸关的一刻，斗牛士必须使出真本领，半点含糊不得。所以，人们渐渐用了这个词来比喻「紧要关头」或「严酷考验才能、人格等的时刻」，例如：
the moment of truth is quickly approaching for the students. （学生们快要面临严酷考验了。）
could they undergo torture without betraying their comrades? nobody knows. （他们能够经受酷刑不出卖同志么，谁都不知道。）
