10. 啄序
古时中国社会有所谓「三纲」：「君为臣纲，父为子纲，夫为妻纲」，长幼尊卑分得清清楚楚。女权分子当然不会喜欢这样画分尊卑的社会秩序（feminists certainly would not relish such a social pecking order.）。
为甚么这里把「画分尊卑的社会秩序」译做a social pecking order呢？按：peck是「啄」的意思，pecking order直译就是「啄序」。鸡、驴或其他飞禽之间，多数尊卑等级分明，比较强壮、地位较高的，可以肆无忌惮啄地位较低的，对方不会反抗、报复。这就叫做 pecking order。现在，人们往往用这个词来说任何团体的长幼尊卑次序，例如：
at the bottom of the firm's pecking order, he had no say whatever in the matter.（他是公司最低层的员工，在这件事情上完全没有发言权。）
