129. 当众洗脏衣
魏晋时代，富贵人家喜欢斗有钱斗奢华。当时有七月七日晒衣习俗，贫寒的名士阮咸见达官贵人都趁这机会炫耀纱罗锦绮，于是以「未能免俗」为名，用竹竿挑一短裤在院子里晒，「人或怪之」（《世说新语·任诞》）。他们感到奇怪是很自然的事：家无锦衣这样的「丑事」，一般人是不会外扬的。
在英国，「人或怪之」的会是wash one's dirty linen in public。按linen是亚麻布造的衣物，「当众洗肮脏衣物」，对英国人来说，等于家丑外扬了，例如：diana openly dwelled on her extramarital relationships with such gusto that she evidently had no scruples whatever about washing her dirty linen in pubic（黛安娜公开详谈自己的奸情，谈得那么津津有味，显然是完全不怕家丑外扬的了）。
