有一次和一群好友在 school mallway 谈天，突然beth 一脸正经地对我们说：“derek's brother likes black male.”听她这么说，我一脸疑惑地问她：“i didn't know that he's a gay!”话一说完，只听一群人开始大笑，还有人笑得眼泪都流了出来，她们好不容易恢复了平静，beth忍着笑告诉我：“not black male ! we're talking about that derek's brother likes to blackmail people.”

在一次参观学校活动中，我看到一个看板上写着：statk！ 心里想：“怎么印象中没读过这个单词？”回家后查词典也没查到。
事后请教其他老美朋友，才恍然大悟！原来这个statk根本不是单词，而是 stop talk 的缩写，取发音相同，要同学上课专心，不要讲话！美语有许多语汇跟中文一样，用简写代替，像 for you 就变成 4u 了。

一天，我们夫妇俩正在家门前整修草地，忽见一辆汽车徐徐驶来，只听得车中妇人向我问到：“where's this street leader（街道领导）？”我岁已在 this street 居住３年有余，可从没听说过什么“街道领导”，丈二和尚摸不着头脑，赶紧问劳工：“你知道街道领导在哪里吗？”老公笑着说她问的是： “where's this street lead?"随即给路人指点了方向。英文不灵光的我，则把这句英语牢牢地记住了。
