Job Hunter

Sinion had a cousin called Amy

who had to leave school and get a job to support her family.

She had loved shopping since she was a little girl,

so she decided to look for a job in a department store.

She began her hunt at an office of the Labour Department's Careers Advisory Service.

Here she got two pamphlets.

'Choosing Your Career' told her how to apply for a job

and what to do at an interview.

'Department Stores' described the kinds of jobs available in these stores,

the qualifications needed for them,

the salaries, working hours and holidays, and training and prospects.

Amy's next step was to search the newspapers

until she found a suitable vacancyand write a letter of application.

As a result, she was invited to an interview.

She was delighted but like most applicants

she got nervous when she thought about the interview.

Fortunately, she knew what to do to build up her confidence.

Before she went to the interview, she made two journeys.

One was to a branch of the store.

While she walked round it,

she noted the things it sold how the staff behaved and the way they dressed.

Information about the company that was going to interview her

would come in handy later.

After she visited the store, she made a second journey.

This was from her home to the exact place of the interview

so she knew how long she would need to get there.

At all costs she had to be on time for the interview.

As this day approached,

she began to think about possible interview questions and to prepare her answers.

'Choosing Your Career'

helped her as it contained a list of interview questions.

Some were difficult to answer as they made her examine her character

ambitions, strengths and weaknesses.

The job advertisement also suggested possible questions.

For example, how could she prove that she had 'initiative'?

On the day of the interview,

since she wanted to make a good first impressionon the interviewer,

she dressed to look her best.

In fact, she chose clothes similar in style to those she had seen the staff in the store wearing.

She arrived for the interview about ten minutes early

and when she wascalled walked confidently into the interview room.

As she entered, she responded pleasantly to the interviewer's greeting

and after she was invited sat down ready to begin.

She was still nervous but,at the same time confident.

She was sure that she would do well,

because she had prepared for the interview thoroughly.
