2-1：分词做形容词
例：the student raised a confusing question.
（这学生提出一个令人困惑的问题。）
the teacher was confused.
（这老师被搞迷糊了。）
上述第一例中confusing为现在分词，做形容词用，修饰之后的名词，译成“令人困惑的”。第二例中confused为过去分词，做形容词用，置于be动词was之后，做主语补语，修饰主语the teacher，译成“感到困惑的”。
注意
分词做形容词用时，可置于名词之前，修饰该名词，亦可置于be动词之后，纯做主语补语。
分词做形容词用时，如何判断应使用现在分词或过去分词？
这是个很重要的问题，如果不弄清楚的活，我们很可能写出下面的错误句子而不自觉：
例：when he heard the story, he was very exciting.(x)
----when he heard the story, he was very excited.(o)
注意
exciting令人兴奋的，excited感到兴奋的。
分词做形容词时，可以表示下列概念：
1．表主动／被动的概念
凡“令人……的”意思时，我们就使用现在分词；凡表“感到……的”时，我们就使用过去分词。
例：he was excited when he heard the news.
（当他听到这个消息时，他很兴奋。——感到兴奋的）
the competition is quite exciting.
（这场比赛很刺激。——令人兴奋的）
the charming lady happens to be john's sister.
（这位迷人的女子刚巧是约翰的妹妹。——令人着迷的）
the boy was charmed with the girl's elegance.
（这个男孩着迷于这女孩的优雅气质。——感到着迷的）
the wounded soldier was rushed to the hospital.
（受伤的士兵被急忙送到医院。——受伤的）
he was interested in the question.
（他对这个问题感兴趣。——感到有趣的）
what an interesting story it is!
（多有趣的故事呀！——令人有趣的）
2.表进行/完成的概念
凡表“正在……的”或“即将……的”意思时，我们就使用现在分词；凡表“已经……的”时，我们就使用过去分词。
例：the retiring teacher came into the classroom.
（即将退休的这位老师进入教室。——即将退休的）
the retired soldier died last month.
（那位退役的军人上个月去世了。——已经退休的）
do you see that fast-moving train?
（你看见那列跑得飞快的火车吗？——正在快速移动的）
the aging father found it hard to do the work.
（即将上年纪的父亲发现很难做这工作。——即将上年纪的）
he is aged, but he stays young in mind.
（他已上了年纪，但心情保持年轻。一一已经上年纪的）
he is gone.
= he has gone.
（他已离开。——已经离开的）
he is returned.
= he has returned.
（他已回来。——已经回来的）
he is graduated.
= he has graduated.
（他已毕业。——已经毕业的）
we are finished with the work.
= we have finished the work.
（我们工作已做完了。——已经做完的）
we are sold out of this book.
= we have sold out this book.
（我们这本书已卖完了。——已经卖完的）
i am (prepared/ready/all set) for the exam.
（我已准备好考试。一一已经准备好的）
举了那么多的例子，无非想证明，只要了解上面所列的原则，那么分词做形容词的用法并不难。
我们且练习一下下列填充题：
get me some_______(boiled, boiling) water to drink.
正确的答案应为boiled（已经煮开过的）
-----get me some boiled water to drink.
（给我弄点开水喝喝。）
我们若选boiling（正在开的，正在沸腾的），那我们喝下boiling water（正在开的水）之后，我们的食道必然被烫熟了，这样烫的水流到大肠时，岂不变成了猪大肠，可以切来吃了。
我们再练习一下下列的填充题:
he is sweeping________________(falling, fallen) leaves in the ______(falling,fallen) rain.
（他在雨中扫落叶。）
正确答案应为：第一个空格：fallen（已经掉下来的）；第二个空格：falling（正在下的）
如果我们的答案是这样：
he is sweeping falling leaves in the fallen rain.(x)
就成了：他在已经落下来的雨中扫正在掉下的树叶。
那么这个人一定是扁平如纸的人，可以躺在地上（已经落下的）雨水中，同时又可以挥着手扫一片一片正在掉下来的树叶。如果有一天我们真见到这样的人，我们就得赶紧逃跑，因为那不是人，那是妖怪！
