rather 蛮……地，相当地
此二字可修饰原级副词或形容词
例：he is quite old.
（他很老了。）
he is rather old.
（他相当老了。）
he studies quite hard.
（他相当用功。）
但修饰形容词十名词时：
he is a quite good student.(x)
he is a quite a good student.(o)
（他是个相当不错的学生。）
they are quite good students.(o)
（他们是相当好的学生。）
he is rather an old man.(o)
（他是个相当老的人。）
they are rather old men.
（他们相当老了。）
