(Scientists Develop Cholera Vaccine Using Rice Protein)
Japanese scientists say they have developed a new rice-based vaccine that could give developing nations a cheaper, effective treatment for the disease cholera. Scientists say the new oral vaccine has proven effective in producing antibodies in mice.
Currently, oral and injectable vaccines are available. However, most of them require refrigeration, which can be expensive in developing countries in Africa and parts of Asia.
If this latest vaccine proves effective in humans, scientists say it would be easier to distribute, because it has a long shelf life and would not require refrigeration.
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that causes diarrhea and vomiting. Without prompt treatment it can lead to severe dehydration and death.
(US, Russia Work Together to End North Korea Financial Dispute)
The United States says it is working with authorities in Russia and Macau to end a financial dispute that has delayed North Korea's nuclear disarmament process. A U.S. Treasury Department spokeswoman said Monday the United States appreciates the willingness of the Russian government to facilitate the transfer of 25-million dollars in North Korean funds from a bank in Macau.
Meanwhile, the top U.S. envoy to talks on North Korea's nuclear ambitions, Christopher Hill, and his South Korean counterpart, Chun Yung-woo, met in Washington late Monday to discuss the money stalemate and other issues. North Korea has refused to shut down its main nuclear reactor, as it promised in February, until it receives the funds.
