When he realized that his career would be thwarted inclass-ridden Britain，Samuel Slater（1768-1835，founder ofAmerican textile industry）memorized details of the textile ma-chinery in Richard Arkwright's modern factory.He disguised himself as a farm laborer and sailed for America.Working frommemory，Slater created the industrial age in the New World，building in Pawtucket，Rhode Island，in 1793，the first factory inthe U.S.based on the advanced new machinery.He later builtother factories in New England.As the father of the industrial-ization of his adopted country，Slater gave the U.S.evengreater opportunity for true independence .
