Czar Nicholas Ⅱ（1868-1918）of Russia faithfully wrote inhis diary every day.Though his reign was filled with politicalchange and social upheaval ，the entries usually consisted merelyof descriptions of walks and teas.On the day in 1906 that hedissolved the Duma （the Russian legislature ）when a majorityof opposition candidates were elected to the representative body ，Nicholas described the weather，his walk，his dinner，and hisevening reading.There was only one sentence about the day'shighlight news：“Signed a decree dissolving the Duma.”
