China and Pakistan have closed ranks in a symbolic gesture following the souring of Islamabad’s relations with the US over the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Wen Jiabao, China’s premier, provided badly needed public support to Pakistan on Wednesday, assuring Yusuf Raza Gilani, Pakistan’s visiting prime minister, that “no matter what changes might take place in the international landscape, China and Pakistan will remain for ever good neighbours, good friends, good partners and good brothers”.

Mr Gilani in turn massaged Beijing’s ego by saying Pakistan would like to see China take a dominant role in world affairs. “I have no doubt that Chinese sagacity and thought will have a profoundly beneficial impact for the mankind, as a whole. We are happy to see China shape the 21st-century world,” Mr Gilani said in Suzhou in eastern China.

China and Pakistan have been firm allies for 60 years but the timing of their meetings this week give their statements of mutual support an extra edge.

China supports Pakistan economically and recently provided a nuclear reactor under a deal criticised in Washington. The two countries also have a growing military co-operation, most importantly focused on a joint fighter jet. They signed agreements to expand banking and mining co-operation on Wednesday.

But the display of friendship is likely to be seen as a further snub in Washington, where a debate on how far Islamabad can be trusted has been going on since the killing of bin Laden in Abbottabad, a town close to the capital.

Five US Democratic senators wrote to Obama administration officials on Wed?nes?day pressing for assurances on Pakistan’s commitment to fighting ter- ??rorism before Congress provides billions more in aid.

Talking to the Financial Times this week, Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate armed services committee, said civilian aid should be reconsidered but opposed halting reimbursement to Pakistan’s military for its efforts against Islamist ?militants.

Mr Gilani’s visit might trigger more such unease. He praised the “renaissance of the ancient and glorious” Chinese civilisation with accomplishments in culture and technology, a hint that Beijing could rise to a level where it would be capable of replacing the US.

Ahmad Mukhtar, Pakistan’s defence minister, who was also on the trip, said the two government heads discussed the Abbottabad raid. “We told them that our sovereignty had to be accepted by everybody. We will not let anybody come into our territory without announcing who they are,” he said.
