(Belarus Criticizes Planned US Anti-Missile Sites in Poland, Czech Republic)
Belarus' Air Force Chief Igor Azaryonok is warning that the deployment of U.S. missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic will increase military tensions in the region. Igor Azaryonok said Tuesday in Minsk that his country does not have the types of weapons the U.S. missile defense systems are designed to destroy.
Poland lies along Belarus' western border, while the Czech Republic lies further to the southwest. On Monday, a senior Russian military commander warned that Moscow is capable of targeting the proposed missile defense sites in the Czech Republic and Poland. General Nikolai Solovtsov said Russia would be able to start building intermediate and short-range missiles if the Kremlin drops out of an arms treaty with the United States.
(Measles Epidemic Kills Four in North Korea)
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says a measles epidemic in North Korea has killed at least four people and sickened three-thousand others. The aid group says local health facilities are treating about one-thousand patients and a mass vaccination campaign is under way. It says North Korea has requested five-thousand doses of vaccine from international aid agencies.
Measles has spread to 30 North Korea counties since November, but local authorities did not confirm the outbreak until last week with the help of World Health Organization testing kits. The federation says the diagnosis was delayed because measles was thought to have been eradicated from the country in 1992 and local health officials initially misidentified the disease as rubella.
