The U.S. State Department issues a travel warning -- to the world. It warns Americans that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, "particularly in the Middle East and North Africa," according to a statement. It prompted the U.S. to close 21 U.S. embassies and consulates this Sunday, including Afghanistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, U.S. security sources say there is no single target and that the advisory applies more broadly to Western interests. But travelers at the Capital's largest airport, Washington Dulles International, didn't let the threat get in the way of their destination Friday.

The worldwide warning isn't out of the ordinary. The State Department regularly issues what it calls "Worldwide Caution" warnings to U.S. citizens, alerting them of the general potential danger of attacks around the world. One U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday's travel alert was based on more specific information. The last "Worldwide Caution" was issued on February 19.
