Chinese authorities have detained 20 foreigners in a remote Inner Mongolian city on claims they are linked to a terrorist group, according to a local official.

The detentions come as China grows increasingly active in severing international ties to what it claims is a domestic terrorist movement involving the minority Uighur population native to Xinjiang on its central Asian frontier. Last week Thailand repatriated 109 of about 400 Uighurs discovered in human smuggling camps in southern Thailand, against their wishes.

The tourists were detained on Friday morning at the airport in Ordos, according to Shameel Joosub, chief of Vodacom, South Africa’s largest telecoms company, whose brother, aunt and uncle were among those detained. Mr Joosub said the group — which included 10 British, nine South African and one Indian — had been accused of watching a propaganda video.

Zhang Xi, an official in Ordos in charge of dealing with foreigners, said: “Some of the people detained are suspected of watching and spreading content related to terrorism. They are in a detention centre and people from the British embassy visited yesterday.”

The foreigners were on a 47-day tour of ancient sites in China, Mr Joosub said, adding that Chinese authorities had failed to provide notice of their detention until the tour bus operator discovered they were missing.

“My family and I are deeply concerned for the safety and wellbeing of my brother, aunt and uncle,” Mr Joosub said in a statement.

Mr Joosub’s three relatives are among the nine still held at an Ordos detention centre on charges of watching the videos. The other 11 would be deported, Mr Joosub said.

China says that some disaffected Uighurs, a Muslim group with cultural and linguistic ties to Turkey, are trying to escape to Syria and Iraq to join terrorist groups. Last weekend police accused Turkish diplomats of providing documentation to allow Uighurs to travel.

At the weekend, police in the north-east city of Shenyang shot dead three Uighur men in a rented apartment and wounded a woman. Another woman and three children were taken into custody. Police said the group had been found as part of an investigation into a little-known group called Hijrah Jihad, an ethnic separatist organisation. Uighur exile groups said they were trying to cross China’s northern borders.
