félix savon dominated amateur boxing's heavyweight division for fourteen years, beginning in 1986, when he won his first world championship. unfortunately, he was unable to take part in the 1988 olympics because his nation, cuba, boycotted the seoul games. savon did fight in the 1992 olympics. in the quarterfinals, he faced an unexpected obstacle: danell nicholson of the united states. savon was forced to come from behind in the last round to win 13-11. the rest of his bouts were easy, and culminated in a 14-1 victory in the final over david izonritel of nigeria. savon was not seriously challenged at the 1996 olympics, winning a second gold medal by beating david defiagbon of canada 20-2. at the sydney olympics of 2000, savon, by now 33 years old, again won easily, defeating sebastian köber of germany 14-8 in the semifinals and sultan ahmed ibragimov of russia 21-13 in the final. savon, who stood 1.98m, is one of only three boxers to win three gold medals.

费利克斯-萨翁是古巴著名业余拳击运动员，他于1967年09月22日出生于古巴东部关塔那摩省一个种植甘蔗的农民家庭，最初他从事划船和田径运动，1980年，在教练的建议下，身高1米96，体重90公斤的萨翁开始改练拳击。在他的运动生涯中，他曾经雄霸世界业余拳坛重量级项目达14年之久。1986年，萨翁第一次获得世界锦标赛冠军，但因为古巴抵制1988年汉城奥运会，萨翁没能出现在汉城。1992年，在西班牙巴塞罗纳奥运会上，萨翁第一次夺得奥运会男子拳击重量级比赛冠军。1996年美国亚特兰大奥运会上，萨翁没有遇到太大的挑战就轻松获得91公斤级金牌。2000年悉尼奥运会，31岁的他第三次夺得男子91公斤级金牌，从而实现奥运冠军三连冠，成为奥运历史上三位三夺奥运金牌的拳击运动员之一。
