from death's door to triple gold
deborah compagnoni's career was plagued by frequent injuries and major illnesses. she endured four operations on her knees, survived a serious kidney infection and once, in 1990, she almost died from an intestinal blockage. compagnoni's olympic success began in 1992 when she won the gold medal in the super giant in méribel. the very next day, compagnoni fell in the giant slalom and ended up back in hospital. concentrating on technical events, she won the giant slalom at the 1994 olympics. she repeated her giant slalom victory at the 1998 nagano games and became the first alpine skier to win gold medals in three different olympics. she also earned a silver medal in the slalom, missing a fourth gold by only six-hundredths of a second.

黛博拉-孔帕尼奥尼的职业生涯一直受到不断的伤痛和疾病的影响，她的膝盖曾经接受了四次手术，她还接受了一次肾脏感染手术。1990年，肠道阻碍更差点结束她的生命。孔帕尼奥尼的奥运辉煌历史开始与1992年的法国阿尔贝维尔冬季奥运会，她在超级大回转中夺取了一枚金牌，第二天，她参加大回转比赛时候，从空中摔下来，直接送进了医院，并在病床上结束了她的第一次奥运之旅。1994年挪威利勒哈默尔冬季奥运会上，她弥补了遗憾，获得了大回转比赛的金牌。1998 年日本长野冬季奥运会上，她又一次夺取了超级大回转的金牌，成为第一位在三届奥运会中连续拿到金牌的滑雪运动员。
