1992年的奥运会在西班牙巴塞罗举行。那里是国际奥委会主席萨马兰奇的故乡，是素有“地中海明珠”之称的国际旅游胜地。历史上巴塞罗那曾申办过1924、1936和1940年的3届奥运会，但均未成功。因而，他们非常珍惜这次机会，决心在国际奥委会的支持下，举办一届历史上最成功的奥运会。
中国此次选派男运动员118人、女运动员133人参加除足球、曲棍球、棒球、手球及马术以外共20个项目的比赛。中国代表团在经过1988年汉城奥运会的失意后，本次重新发挥出高水平，结果共获金牌16枚，银牌22枚，铜牌16枚，成绩超过了此前最高的1984年奥运会时，取得了历史最好成绩。中国台北棒球队则获得了该项目的银牌。
