Andrea: Ever wondered how famous actors start out?

Andrea: Well, a lot of them go to drama school and today on Ask About Britain, we’ve got a question exactly about that.
Jean: 英国的戏剧学校。
Andrea: Hello. I’m Andrea.

Andrea: Wendy, who is a college student in Beijing, wrote in to tell us that she is passionate about drama.
Jean: 听上去Wendy 对戏剧表演实在是非常的喜爱，她想上完学就去学表演。那Andrea, 我们能给Wendy 介绍一下英国的戏剧学校吗？
Andrea: We spoke to Murray Woodfield who is a theatre director but also teaches at a number of drama schools in London. He’s helped many students get into drama school. Firstly, which are some of Britain’swell-known drama schools?

Wendy could go to one of the famous ones: RADA, which is the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Some of the famous people who’ve been there are Alan Rickman, Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes. Central School of Speech and Drama is another one. Very good. Famous actors like Judy Dench and Peggy Ashcroft. There’s LAMDA. There’s Mountview. Or outside London there’s Guildford or the Bristol Old Vic.

Andrea: Ooh. He’s scary! There are also other good schools like Central School of Speech and Drama and the Bristol Old Vic.

To get into drama school you have to audition for them. Auditions can take many forms. If it’s for one of the straight drama schools, it’s probable at first that you’ll have to do a two minute speech from a modern play and a two minute speech from a classical play – a classical would probably be something like Shakespeare. You’d have to learn it by heart, you’d have to interpret the character. You’d probably have to get some coaching from somebody who knew. You’d have to have a very clear voice and be emotionally truthful.
Andrea: Murray tells us how you get into drama school. You have to do an audition to get in.
Jean: An audition 看来是要来试演试镜的。Murray 也给我们介绍了我们在面对考官的时候需要做些什么。
Andrea: You have to prepare two kinds of speeches. A two minute speech from a modern play. And a two minute speech from a classical play, like Shakespeare.
Jean: 还要准备两段发挥自己演技和发音的独白戏monologue.
Andrea: Murray also says that you have to learn the speeches by heart.
Jean: To learn something off by heart. 就是一定要熟记在心。
Andrea: And you must make sure you act them with a very clear voice.
Jean: 而在表演的时候，你的讲话情绪和表演都一定要表现出情绪的逼真emotionally truthful.
Andrea: Gosh that sounds hard. I wonder how easy it is to get into a drama school.

There are far more people that audition than are actually accepted. You can only look to yourself and be the person you are and interpret the character the way you see it should be. And perhaps they see something magical in you and they choose you.
Andrea: So getting a place at a drama school is hard.
Jean: 来应试的人太多了，就像Murray 所说，来应试的人和最后录取的人比例十分悬殊。
Andrea: His advice is to be yourself.
Jean: Be yourself. 就是做好自己，呈现本色。
Andrea: Interpret the character as you see it.
Jean: 以自己的理解来诠释角色。
Andrea: They might see something magical and decide to choose you!
Jean: 听起来，干表演这一行实在是够不容易的！
Andrea: It is and Murray Woodfield also explains how speaking English well is especially important if you want to get into drama schools in Britain.

As the performing language here is English, their English would have to be very good. I would say that would be the biggest drawback – you’d be competing with people whose English is their first language. However, as a person coming from another country and from perhaps another culture, you could bring something to it that they weren’t used to seeing. And they might think that what you were offering was wonderful and choose you.
Jean: 看来，要会说英语是一大必备条件，尤其在英国学习和表演，不会说英语可不行。
