I am a Chinese registered nurse. After I go to England I want to still work as a nurse. What do I need to do to be able to do this? What conditions do I need to meet? Also could you tell me about a typical day for a nurse in England? Thank you very much!!!
Yang Li: 杨石玲希望了解英国护士的典型工作日是怎样的。What is a typical day for a nurse? Before we listen to the interview I would like you to know the following words and expressions.

My title is a practice nurse. I don’t work in the hospital but I work in a community environment with a general practitioner.
I have been a practice nurse for exactly 15 years and I absolutely love it.
Li: So can you tell us briefly what a typical day is like for you?
Ivy: I wish I could. There is no such thing as a typical day in the life of a practice nurse’s job, because everything that happens is all up to the patients who walk through the door. So on any morning, on any given day, I could start off my workload with perhaps a travel vaccination and with an emergency. For example, a patient who walks in with an asthma attack. It’s all dictated by the nature of the illness.
Li: So can you describe for instance today, you are at the surgery. What do you think you will be doing?
Ivy: I will be doing quite a few injections and treatment room duties. So I could be doing dressings, ear syringing, taking some bloods perhaps, and that sort of thing.
Yang Li: Ivy said that there is no such thing as a typical day in the life of a practice nurse, 对于社区护士来说，没有哪一天是典型的工作日，因为一切都取决于病人的病情 it’s all dictated by the nature of the illness. 不过Ivy 说，这种职业特点给了她很多职业满足感。Listen and find out why Ivy enjoys her job.

Basically it’s very interesting because it’s so varied. You never have the same day twice. And the patients that you meet are all very different, they come in with different characters and different illnesses so it makes your job very interesting in that way. The other thing that I enjoy about my job is that unlike the nurses who work in the hospital, we get to know our patients very well and their families as well. So at the end of the day you build a good relationship with your patients and a lot of the time there is a very strong bond between the nurses and the patients.
Yang Li: 看来Ivy 喜欢她的工作主要有两个原因：一个是工作的多样化 it’s so varied.第二，她和病人之间有一种亲和力，一种紧密地联系 there’s a strong bond between the nurses and the patients.

They would have to be assessed by the Nursing Council; their qualifications in China would have to be verified; they would have to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, who regulates us. And we, as nurses in England, have to go by the professional code of conduct which we are bound by.

When you start, before you actually become a qualified nurse, you are a student nurse. When you finish your three years’ training and you pass all your exams then you become a staff nurse. After many years of experience as a staff nurse you will become a sister.
