Hi. I'm Gao Yuanxue in China. I'm studying economics here. Considering I have a plan to further my studies abroad after my graduation, I'm very, very interested in what plans students in the UK have after their graduation. Will they use what they studied? That's it. Thank you.
Yang Li: 高原雪希望大学毕业之后继续深造 further her studies.
Finn: Yes, she studies economics and wants to further her studies in this direction. She wonders if students in the UK tend to use their degrees directly in their careers.
Yang Li: What about the students from your course Finn?
Finn: Well, of the 20 students who studied Chinese, I would say maybe half of them use Chinese in their jobs today.
Yang Li: Including you!

In terms of economics, I hope to use it in a more holistic sense. Not the economics knowledge itself, but sort of the skills the degree gives, the analytical skills. The possibility to think in terms of models and structures.

Finn: Holistic. Yes, she said she might not use the economics knowledge itself, but instead the skills, such as analytical skills, that the degree gives her.

Finn: Yes, these are skills you would learn in economics and could apply to other things – we call these transferable skills.
Yang Li: 能够转换的技巧 transferable skills. Let's hear a bit more about transferable skills from this student – 她是伦敦政经学院的学生。
Finn: Which transferable skills does she mention?

I want to work in a bank, like investment banking. I’m not sure because I still haven’t learnt anything about finance. But I think that firms, they come to LSE and pick students. They don’t care about which major you’re doing. They look at your problemsolving skills, your communication skills and how you, like, acquire new knowledge so you can work.
Yang Li: 她提到的技巧都包括哪些？
Finn: Well, she mentioned problem-solving skills, communication skills and how you acquire new knowledge.
Yang Li: 解决问题、交流和获得新知识的技巧。
Finn: All very important in any job. And she said she wanted to work in an investment bank, but even though she knows nothing about finance, she thinks this won't stop her finding a job, as employers look for these other skills instead, these transferable skills.
Yang Li: 完全同意，我认为，大家要记住的最重要的一点就是，即使你工作中没有直接用到你的专业，但是雇主对你在大学以及生活当中学到的那些可转换的技巧也是感兴趣的。所以我想在下面的节目里我们是不是应该集中探讨一些这些关键性的可转换技巧呢？
