Welcome to a mindful edition of 6 Minute English, where were exploring the rise of mindfulness particularly in schools. 濂界锛炽娆㈣ュ版蹇电辫锛浠澶╂浠璁ㄦ蹇电灞锛灏ゅ舵ㄥ瀛¢ [00:42.30] And well be teaching six items of vocabulary along the way. So I think we should start with mindfulness itself. 舵浠浼澶у6涓板璇瑙寰浠璇ヤ蹇佃涓寮濮 [00:49.90] Being mindful, as an adjective, means being calmly aware of everything in your body and mind. You only focus on now. Mindful浣涓轰涓舰瀹硅锛蹇浣韬澶ц涓涓瑗库锛涓娉ㄤㄢ [00:58.50] People practise mindfulness, the noun, by focusing only on their breath, and not allowing themselves to be distracted by passing thoughts. 浜轰滑缁涔姝e康锛甯告娉ㄦ涓ㄥ煎镐锛涓璁歌繁琚朵浜╁绁 [01:07.80] Indeed. Its traditionally associated with Buddhism, and has become incredibly popular in the secular world in workplaces, in private classes and even in schools. 纭浼缁涓杩涓涓炽濡浠宸茬ㄤ淇涓板寰甯告琛锛ㄥ杈瀵肩冲ㄥ¢ [01:17.60] Secular means non-religious by the way. 椤轰究璇翠涓锛Secular瀹涓淇 [01:20.30] OK, I just mentioned schools: how many teachers in the UK are trained to teach mindfulness? Is it 瀵癸板★卞芥澶灏甯ㄦ硅浠ヤ究姝e康锛 [01:26.80] a) 500,b) 5,000 orc) 50,000? a) 500锛b) 5000锛杩c) 50000锛 [01:31.70] Let me focus really hard I think its 5,000. 璁╂濂藉ソ虫斥瑙寰5000 [01:37.80] A very mindful answer, Catherine. But Ill reveal the real answer later. 甯歌皑绛妗锛炽浣绋姝g绛妗 [01:42.90] Now lets hear from one teacher whos been practising mindfulness with students for many years. 浠ュ浣甯娉澶骞存ュス瀛涓璧风涔姝e康 [01:48.00] Alison Mayo, Head of Early Years at Dharma Primary School, thinks its particularly suited to young children. Why? ╂插ㄤ娉灏璐璐d汉捐妫㈡濂ヨ涓猴姝e康甯搁骞煎垮涔涓轰涔 [01:56.20] Thats very natural for children - to be in the present. 姝e康瀵瑰跨ヨ甯歌剁琛涓衡娲诲ㄥ涓 [02:00.00] And we really kind of celebrate that because that is a place where they are learning. 浠剁充搴绁瀹涓哄瀛浠涔版广 [02:04.00] So, if they feel grounded, then they can really develop their concentration and their focus, and relax. 姝わ濡瀛╁浠寰虹濂戒锛浠浠氨界姝e娉ㄦ锛跺炬俱 [02:11.50] Learning happens so much more easily if youre relaxed and happy. 褰浣澶浜绉炬惧寮蹇舵锛瀛灏卞涓浠跺瀹规浜 [02:16.80] Alison said it was natural for children to be in the present. 捐妫〃绀猴娲诲ㄥ涓瀵瑰跨ヨ甯歌躲 [02:21.00] The present means now. Youll know it from the present tense in grammar. present稿浜ㄢ浣搴璇ョラ瀹ヨ娉涓ㄦ垛 [02:25.90] And people who practise mindfulness use this phrase a lot to be in the present, or in the present moment. 缁涔姝e康浜虹父浼浣跨ㄨ涓锛娲诲ㄥ涓 [02:34.70] It sounds simple, but actually its very hard to achieve. 捣ョ锛瀹涓寰惧般 [02:37.70] Well, Neil, it might be for an old chap like you, but for young people, Miss Mayo thinks its very natural. 濂藉э灏煎瀵逛杩风瀹朵芥杈撅浣姊濂ュコ澹涓猴瀵瑰辜挎ヨ锛杩浠堕甯歌剁浜 [02:44.80] Fair enough. Being grounded, as she says, helps students concentrate and learn in a relaxed way. 姝e濂规璇达娓妤拌璇繁浠ュ府╁瀛浠ㄤ绉杞绘剧瑰涓簿瀛 [02:50.90] Grounded is another good adjective there it means rational, sensible, clear thinking. Grounded涔涓舰瀹硅х锛虹璺扮 [02:57.10] So, shes a fan of mindfulness. And theres growing evidence behind its benefits. 浠ワ濂规涓蹇佃糠瓒ヨ澶璇浠ヨ澶 [03:01.70] Yes. The UKs national health advisory body has recommended it to help treat conditions like depression and anxiety. 卞藉藉ㄨ烘ㄦ蹇垫ユ不 [03:09.90] Studies have shown it reduces levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. 绌惰浜峰川 [03:13.90] And a new study has claimed that eating mindfully can actually help people to lose weight. 杩涓椤规扮绌惰〃ギ椋涓蹇浠ュ府╀汉浠ャ [03:19.90] You mean eating slowly? 浣寰寰 [03:21.30] Yeah, slowly and really experiencing and tasting the food. Not being distracted and not eating too much too fast! 锛缁兼㈠斤ㄥ灏椋┿涓瑕蹇锛涔涓瑕寰澶澶揩 [03:30.30] Anyway, Neil, is mindfulness taking over the world? 讳锛灏煎锛蹇佃缁娌讳浜锛 [03:34.10] Well, not quite yet. There still arent many detailed studies on it and some critics say the studies we have show a publication bias. 杩娌℃充璁稿绌惰寰娣卞ワ浜璇璁哄绉拌浜绌跺ㄢ琛ㄥ [03:42.90] In other words, only the positive results are published. ㈠璇璇村氨绉缁琚琛ㄥ烘ヤ [03:45.10] A bias is when you support something or someone in an unfair way, because of your preferences or beliefs. Bias浣浠朵涓汉锛瀹ㄦц繁濂芥虫 [03:52.40] What seems certain is that mindfulness has entered into many aspects of modern life, at least here in the UK. 浠ョ‘瀹蹇靛凡缁ョ浠g娲荤澶涓锛冲ㄨ卞芥枫 [03:58.20] Now, lets look back at our question. I asked how many teachers in the UK have been trained in mindfulness. 椤句涓涔卞芥澶灏甯浜姝e康硅 [04:04.20] And I said 5,000. 跺璇5000 [04:06.10] Well, it was actually 5,000. Well done! According to the Mindfulness Initiative. And it keeps on growing. 瀵圭锛纭5000甯稿ソ锛杩涓版辫卞Mindfulness Initiative渚锛瀹杩ㄤ裤 [04:13.10] So before we finish up, heres another question that might be useful for our listeners whats the difference between mindfulness and meditation? 浠ワㄧ涔锛涓涓璁稿浠圭ㄥ姝e康ユ充存浠涔哄 [04:21.80] Aha thats not so easy to define. 锛杩涓濂借 [04:24.20] Meditation is the broader term. When you meditate you spend time quietly focusing your mind - often for relaxation or spiritual purposes. ユ崇村箍娉涓浜褰浣ユ崇跺锛浣堕存甯稿涓敞锛负浜炬剧簿绁 [04:33.10] Mindfulness is a particular a kind of meditation when you try to empty your mind of thought. Does that make sense? 姝e康绉规褰㈠ユ斥浣瑕灏藉娓绌烘缁瑙d锛 [04:39.70] Yeah, more or less. So well let our listeners meditate on that answer. 澶灏规浜浠ユ浠璇峰浠繁ユ涓涓d釜绛妗 [04:44.70] And before we empty our minds, lets look back at todays words. ㄦ绌烘缁锛浠ュ椤句涓浠澶╃璇 [04:48.90] We had mindfulness, mindful and mindfully they all relate to the particular practice of being only focused of whats happening now. 姝e康锛蹇锛璋ㄦ扳浠浠芥涓敞ㄧ浜涓 [04:59.30] Whats happening now, or we could say whats happening in the present. ㄦ浜锛璁告浠浠ヨ褰涓浜 [05:02.70] People often focus on the past thinking back about mistakes or happy memories 浜轰滑诲娆㈡х浜锛宠璇蹇璁板 [05:07.30] Or on the future which can be full of worries. 绘宠薄ワ戒婊$笺 [05:10.10] But by being in the present you overcome these thoughts and fears. 浣椿ㄥ涓锛浣浼杩浜缁互с [05:14.70] Next we had secular. It contrasts with religious. So, while a church is a religious building, we also have secular buildings like factories and shops and hospitals 涓涓涓secular涓淇锛瀹涓religious瀹姝g稿d锛绉瀹寤虹锛浠涓淇寤虹锛姣濡璇村伐搴婚⑩ [05:26.30] ll non-religious buildings, in other words! 釜璇灏辨瀹寤虹 [05:28.40] Exactly.
