china has pledged to shift its monetary policy from "prudent" to "tight", a policy change in ten years.
yuan gang, a professor with the institute of economics of the chinese academy of social sciences explains.

"our economy has maintained high-speed growth in the last five years and will hit over 11 percent this year. this fast growth has solved problems that couldn't be solved for quite a long time. but when it reaches a certain level, inflation is possible. meanwhile, the consumer price index has surged this year. will fast growth in the economy cause more price hikes? now it hasn't, but we have to prevent it from happening."

it is predicted that the country's gross domestic product will rise by 11.6 percent this year, higher than that of last year.
to the international front

on the iran nuclear issue. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad said on wednesday that the new us intelligence review concluding iran stopped developing an atomic weapons programme in 2003 is a "declaration of victory" for iran's nuclear programme.

"the report from the united states intelligence agencies was apparently aimed at solving the us government's problems and determined to help the us get out of the impasse which it is trapped in now. but in reality, the report was a declaration of victory for the iranian nation against the world powers over the nuclear issue."

us president george w. bush said on tuesday that the international community should continue to put pressure on iran about its nuclear programmes.

"and so i view this report as a warning signal, that they had the programme, they halted the programme. and the reason why it's a warning signal is that they could restart it. and the thing that would make a restarted programme effective and dangerous is the ability to enrich uranium, the knowledge of which could be passed on to a hidden programme."

the us intelligence report released on monday concluded that iran had stopped its weapons programme in late 2003 and shown no signs of resuming it. the report represented a sharp turnaround from a previous intelligence assessment in 2005.

un secretary-general ban ki-moon has called for early discussions over establishing a successor agreement to the kyoto protocol which expires in 2012.

speaking in new york on thursday, he said ratifying such an agreement will take roughly two years. and that leaves only two years to negotiate one of the most complex multilateral treaties ever to be undertaken.

"difficult as this path may be, we have no choice. the science has spoken loud and clear. the debate is over. it's time to discuss solutions to solve this problem."

the current kyoto plan commits 36 industrial nations to cut emissions by 2012 by an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels.
on thursday, more than 200 experts issued a declaration at the gathering calling for a 50 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050.
