[00:06.29]As we all know, in the history of mankind, there appeared the Mesopotamian civilization in West Asia, 
[00:14.10]the ancient Egyptian civilization along the Nile in North Africa, 
[00:19.15]the ancient Greek-Roman civilization along the northern bank of the Mediterranean, 
[00:24.17]the ancient Indian civilization in the Indus River Valley in South Asia, 
[00:29.60]and the Chinese civilization originating in the Yellow and Yangtze river valleys. 
[00:35.93]Owing to earthquake, flood, plague or famine, or to alien invasion or internal turmoil, 
[00:43.82]some of these ancient civilizations withered away, 
[00:47.90]some were destroyed and others became assimilated into other civi1izations. 
[00:54.70]Only the Chinese civilization, thanks to its strong cohesive power and inexhaustible appeal, 
[01:00.28]has survived many vicissitudes intact. 
[01:05.27]The 5,000-year-long civilization is the source of pride of every Chinese. 
[01:09.62]The traditional Chinese culture, both extensive and profound, starts far back and runs a long, long course. 
[01:17.84]More than 2,000 years ago, there emerged in China Confucianism represented by Confucius and Mencius, 
[01:25.87]Taoism represented by Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi, 
[01:29.79]and many other theories and doctrines that figured prominently in the history of Chinese thought, 
[01:36.35]all being covered by the famous term "the masters' hundred schools". 
[01:41.15]From Confucius to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the traditional Chinese culture presents many precious ideas and qualities, 
[01:49.54]which are essentially populist and democratic. 
[01:54.90]For example, they lay stress on the importance of kindness and love in human relations, 
[02:02.69]on the interest of the community, on seeking harmony without uniformity and on the idea that the world is for all. 
[02:06.71]Especially, patriotism as embodied in the saying "Everybody is responsible for the rise or fall of the country"; 
[02:14.98]the populist ideas that "people are the foundation of the country" and that "people are more important than the monarch"; 
[02:23.52]the code of conduct of "Don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you"; 
[02:29.15]and the traditional virtues taught from generation to generation: 
[02:34.45]long suffering and hard working, diligence and frugality in household management, 
[02:39.61]and respecting teachers and valuing education. 
[02:43.50]All these have played a great role in binding and regulating the family, the country and the society.
