[00:05.23]I've been asked a lot since if there are any lessons I've learned about character and leadership. 
[00:12.14]There are three lessons, I think that I have learned, 
[00:15.40]that continue to instruct me to this day, 
[00:18.10]that continue to guide me in both business and in life. 
[00:22.28]The first lesson is that values matter and character counts, 
[00:26.50]and that no matter how much things change, fundamental values shouldn't. 
[00:31.89]For those of you who are just starting out your career, 
[00:35.80]you will find that in leadership-as perhaps in life-the most important decisions you make, 
[00:41.48]and the toughest decisions you make are often the decisions you make alone. 
[00:48.51]The second lesson I've learned about character and leadership is that leadership, 
[00:53.69]just like success, is not a journey, it is a destination. 
[00:59.00]It is perhaps a cliche to say that leadership is a journey not a destination.
[01:05.71]but it is a cliche because it is true, 
[01:07.19]leadership is journey. 
[01:09.77]The only constant in any of our lives, 
[01:12.36]whether you're running a company or running a family, or perhaps running a country is change. 
[01:19.69]And the third lesson I've learned about leadership and success is that real power comes in the connections between all kinds of things, 
[01:28.27]but most importantly real power comes from the connections between people. 
[01:33.46]Power comes not from those who stand alone, 
[01:36.75]but from those who can work best with others,
[01:39.87]and reach out to others to achieve a desired outcome. 
[01:44.81]And finding those connections and recognizing those connections is part of what leadership is all about. 
[01:51.21]As leaders, you can never forget that people want to do a good job. 
[01:55.89]They want to be treated with consideration and respect. 
[01:59.94]They want to feel a real sense of accomplishment in . 
[02:03.69]their work, to have their ideas considered, and their achievements recognized. 
[02:08.20]People want to feel like they're part of something larger than themselves---
[02:12.62]to be a party of the larger vision, direction, to be part of worthy goals.
