[00:08.18]When the great director Billy Wilder was asked what makes a movie unforgettable, 
[00:14.32]his answer was simple, "A little bit of magic!" 
[00:16.49]We're all here tonight or sitting at home watching because something came off a movie screen: 
[00:22.50]a little bit of magic touched our lives. 
[00:25.21]And you always remember where you were: 
[00:27.38]the theater, the popcorn, the people you were with when it happened. 
[00:31.87]It was 1968, my family was living in Ottawa, Canada, and the movie was Stanley Kubrick's 2001: 
[00:38.13]a Space Odyssey; 
[00:40.76]I couldn't help stop thinking about what is life, what is space, what is existence? 
[00:47.48]I was 6 years old. And I knew right then and there I wanted to be an astronaut.
[00:52.61]My family traveled a lot: 
[00:54.37]the white-hot thrill of Jaws 
[00:56.74]that was Louisville, Kentucky; senior year, New Jersey Apocalypse Now, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania Raging Bull. 
[01:05.92]I knew I wanted to be an actor. 
[01:08.15]In good times and poor times, movies were my lifesaver. 
[01:11.41]And then last September came an event that would change us. 
[01:15.32]An actor friend said to me: 
[01:16.63]"What are we doing? What are we doing? Is it important? Is it even important what I do?" 
[01:25.42]And what of a night like tonight, should we celebrate the joy and magic the movies bring? 
[01:28.77]Well, dare I say it? More than ever! 
[01:31.39]A small scene, a gesture, even a glance between characters can cross lines, 
[01:37.12]break through barriers, melt prejudie, just plain make us laugh, 
[01:41.34]it brings us all together, that little bit of magic. 
[01:44.70]That's just me. 
[01:47.32]Tonight we are going to listen to you. 
[01:49.48]Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris crisscrossed America asking movie goers and culture-makers a question: 
[01:57.15]"What do movies mean to you?" 
[01:59.22]And you answered.
