[00:02.76]76.Beckham Quits as England Captain 
[00:06.34]On November 15th, 2000, Peter Taylor gave me the greatest honor of my career 
[00:11.75]in making me captain of England and fulfilling my childhood dream. 
[00:16.55]Now almost six years later, having been captain for 58 of my 95 caps, 
[00:22.37]I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter into a new era under Steve McClaren. 
[00:30.13]It has been an honor and a privilege to have captained the country 
[00:34.10]and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England 
[00:38.29]and look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McClaren in any way I can. 
[00:45.20]I came to this decision some time ago, 
[00:48.13]but I had hoped to announce it on the back of a successful World Cup. 
[00:52.73]Sadly, that wasn't meant, that wasn't to be. 
[00:55.79]This decision has been, has been the most difficult of my career to date. 
[01:00.71]But after discussing it with my family and the closest to me, I feel that the time is right. 
[01:06.72]Our performance during this World Cup has not been enough to progress further, 
[01:11.54]and both myself and all the players regret that and are hurt, 
[01:15.61]and are hurt by that more than people realize. 
[01:18.85]I wish to thank all the players, 
[01:22.59]for their support, during my time as captain 
[01:24.61]as well Peter Tailor, Steven and all the coaches.
