[00:00.72]Hi everybody. Today, I’m at Del Sol High School, in Las Vegas, to talk with students and families about immigration.
[00:07.91]We are a nation of immigrants. It has always given America a big advantage over other nations. 
[00:13.65]It keeps our country young, dynamic, and entrepreneurial. 
[00:17.51]But today, our immigration system is broken, and everybody knows it.
[00:21.35]That’s why, nearly two years ago, I came to this school 
[00:24.85]and laid out principles for immigration reform.
[00:27.10]And five months later, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents in the Senate came together to pass a commonsense compromise  bill. 
[00:34.29]That bill would have secured our border, 
[00:36.30]while giving undocumented immigrants who already live here a pathway to citizenship 
[00:40.93]if they paid a fine, started paying their taxes, and went to the back of the line. 
[00:45.50]Independent experts said it would grow our economy, 
[00:48.15]and shrink our deficits.
[00:50.39]Now, had the House of Representatives allowed a yes-or-no vote on that kind of bill, 
[00:55.30]it would have passed with support from both parties. 
[00:57.94]Today it would be the law. 
[00:59.94]But for a year and a half, 
[01:01.33]Republican leaders in the House have refused to allow that simple vote. 
[01:05.37]Now, I still believe that the best way to solve this problem is by working together -- both parties 
[01:09.74]-- to pass that kind of bipartisan law. 
[01:12.80]But until that happens, there are actions I have the legal authority to take as President 
[01:17.80]-- the same kinds of actions taken by Democratic and Republican Presidents before me 
[01:21.32]-- that will help make our immigration system more fair 
[01:24.18]and more just.
[01:25.69]I took those actions this week. 
[01:27.64]We’re providing more resources at the border to help law enforcement personnel stop illegal crossings, 
[01:32.53]and send home those who do cross over. 
[01:35.11]We’ll focus enforcement resources on people who are threats to our security 
[01:39.00]-- felons, not families; criminals, not children. 
[01:42.82]And we’ll bring more undocumented immigrants out of the shadows so they can play by the rules, 
[01:47.36]pay their full share of taxes, pass a criminal background check, and get right with the law.
[01:52.71]Nothing about this action will benefit anyone who has come to this country recently, 
[01:57.14]or who might try and come to America illegally in the future. 
[02:00.75]It does not grant citizenship, or the right to stay here permanently, or offer the same benefits that citizens receive. 
[02:08.64]And it’s certainly not amnesty, no matter how often the critics say it. 
[02:12.22]Amnesty is the immigration system we have today 
[02:14.84]-- millions of people living here without paying their taxes, or playing by the rules. 
[02:19.23]And the actions I took this week will finally start fixing that.
[02:22.61]As you might have heard, there are Members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better.
[02:27.71]Well, I have one answer for that: 
[02:29.66]Pass a bill. The day I sign it into law, 
[02:32.81]the actions I’ve taken to help solve this problem will no longer be necessary.
[02:37.78]In the meantime, we can’t allow a disagreement over a single issue to be a dealbreaker on every issue. 
[02:43.38]That’s not how our democracy works. 
[02:45.63]This debate deserves more than politics as usual. 
[02:48.61]It’s important for our future. 
[02:50.59]It’s about who we are, and the future we want to build.
[02:54.47]We are only here because this country welcomed our forebears, 
[02:57.90]and taught them that being American is about more than what we look like or where we come from. 
[03:03.00]What makes us Americans is our shared commitment to an ideal 
[03:07.16]-- that all of us are created equal, 
[03:08.83]and all of us have the chance to make of our lives what we will. 
[03:12.41]That’s the country we inherited, and it’s the one we have to leave for future generations.
