[00:01.89]It’s the holidays―a season to give thanks for our many blessings. 
[00:06.49]The love of family. The joy of good friends. 
[00:10.00]The bonds of community. 
[00:12.33]The freedom we cherish as Americans. 
[00:15.80]The peace and justice we seek in the world.
[00:18.54]As we go about our days, as we gather with loved ones and friends, 
[00:22.13]it’s important to remember: 
[00:24.22]our way of life―the freedom, prosperity and security that we enjoy as Americans
[00:29.72]―is not a gift that is simply handed to us. 
[00:32.99]It has to be earned
[00:34.37]―by every generation. 
[00:35.95]And no one sacrifices more to preserve our blessings than our extraordinary men and women in uniform.
[00:41.80]That’s why, on Monday, I’ll be visiting our troops at 
[00:44.59]Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey
[00:47.50]―to salute them for their service and thank them for their sacrifices. 
[00:51.93]Since our nation was attacked on 9/11, 
[00:54.27]these men and women, like so many others in uniform, 
[00:57.14]have met every mission we’ve asked of them. 
[00:59.92]They deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. 
[01:02.90]In more than a decade of war, this 9/11 Generation has worked with the Afghan people to help them reclaim their communities 
[01:07.90]and prevent terrorist attacks against our own country.
[01:11.70]Now, many of our troops are returning from Afghanistan, 
[01:14.80]and on Monday, I’ll be proud to help welcome them home.
[01:18.13]That’s because, this month, our combat mission in Afghanistan will be over. 
[01:22.41]Our war in Afghanistan is coming to a responsible end.
[01:26.43]Of course, the end of our combat mission in Afghanistan doesn’t mean the end of challenges to our security.
[01:31.75]We’ll continue to work with Afghans to make sure their country is stable and secure 
[01:35.99]and is never again used to launch attacks against America. 
[01:39.89]The troops I’ll visit on Monday have been part of our mission to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL in Iraq and Syria. 
[01:45.94]They’ve been supporting our efforts in West Africa to fight the Ebola epidemic and save lives. 
[01:51.39]Because in times of crisis and challenge, 
[01:54.68]the world turns to America for leadership. 
[01:57.62]And when the world calls on America, 
[01:59.65]we call on the brave men and women of our armed forces to do what no one else can.
[02:04.10]So this holiday season, as we give thanks for the blessings in our own lives, 
[02:08.90]let’s also give thanks to our men and women in uniform who make those blessings possible. 
[02:13.90]Even as some are coming home for the holidays, many more will be far from their families, 
[02:17.36]who sacrifice along with them.
[02:19.59]There are so many ways we can express our gratitude to our troops, 
[02:22.86]their families and our veterans
[02:25.60]―everyone can do something.
