在淘金热的时代，许多人用平底锅（pan)淘金，看到水 底金光闪闪，就把它舀到锅中淘洗。可是有时候看起来闪亮 的沙子，淘洗后却毫无黄金成分，这就是「禁不起淘洗或考 验」（doesn’t pan out) opan out这个词组通常用在否定句，表示「原以为很可靠 或很有潜力的东西，却经不起事实的考验」。有一句英文谚语 说:All that glitters is not gold.(闪闪发光的并非都是黄 金。），有异曲同工之妙。
