hold water
站得住脚
hold water字面上的意思是能「装水」。一个容器要能装 水，质地得够严密，而且不能有任何缺口、裂缝。所以，如 果一种理论或说法能够hold water，就是指它够紧密、没有 破绽、能站得住脚。不过，hold water这个词组比较常用在 否定句，表示「站不住脚」（doesn’t hold water) 。
