eye for an eye出自旧约《圣经》〈出埃及记〉第二十一 章二十四节：If an eye is injured，injure the eye of the person who did it If a tooth gets knocked out，knock out the tooth of the person who did it (如果眼睛受伤，就去伤凶手的眼睛。如果牙齿被打落，就去打落凶手的牙齿。）。后来， eye for an eye就表示「严厉的惩罚或报复」。
