古罗马时代，常命战俘和猛兽在竞技场中格斗，以娱皇 帝。若皇帝看得高兴，举出拇指朝上（thumbs up)的手势， 那么斗士就得以活命。反之，若皇帝拇指朝下（thumbs down)，则表示斗士小命不保，至死方休。因而thumbs up (or down)即有「支持」（或「反对」）的意思?
