at loggerheads这个词组出自航海用语。loggerhead是一种船上用的长柄杓子，水手可用来盛柏油，放在火上烧， 熔化后可以补船体裂缝等。
两艘船若是在水上起冲突，水手常会用loggerhead盛烧 灯的柏油，掷向对方的船上，作为攻击武器。所以，at loggerheads这个词组引申为「对立、冲突」的意思。
