The Mumbai-set movie "Slumdog Millionaire" has earned $217 million at the worldwide box office, the BBC said.
The $15 million film won eight Oscars, including the top prize for best picture and the best director going for British filmmaker Danny Boyle, in Los Angeles last month.
The BBC quoted Fox Searchlight, which released the picture, as saying it expects the box office total to surpass $250 million by the end of its theatrical run.
"It's extraordinary. Very, very few films get past $200 million worldwide," the company's Steve Gilula told Variety.
