Dealing With Holiday Illness

Close quarters, stress and lack of sleep this time of year can lead to holiday colds. But don't let one family member's flu get everyone else down, says Dr. T. Glenn Pait, medical correspondent on Arkansas Today. Along with washing hands and wiping down the phone, doorknobs and other shared household items to prevent spreading germs, follow these tips for a healthy, happy holiday: Pay attention to the ailing. Having to miss festivities can be depressing. To combat loneliness, keep your ailing dad company when he's lonely or bored. Help him feel involved by sharing pictures of events he can't attend, and ask if he'd like to call any friends for a chat.

Be flexible. Usually open gifts at 6 a.m.? Let your sick sister sleep in and unwrap a little later.

Simplify. A sick family member is a good reason to say no to demands on your time. Slowing down during "Stressmas," as Pait calls it, will keep everyone else healthier.

If you're the one who's under the weather, try not to complain. Boost your spirits, and aid the healing process, by watching a favorite movie such as Miracle on 34th Street or listening to some festive music.
