Education Report.In America,May and June are the traditional monthsfor graduations.A listener in China,Jack Hoo from Jiangsu province,wants to knowhow American college graduates find jobs.Right now the answer is: not very easily.The National Association of Collegesand Employers collects informationon the college job market.NACE's latest survey in Marchfound that employers expectedto hire twenty-two percent fewer graduatesthis year than last.Most blamed the recession.The most recent student survey showedthat just one-fifth of thosewho looked for jobsbefore graduation have one by now.This is compared to half of studentswho had looked for a job by this timetwo years ago.But one difference:fewer of this year's graduateshave started to search for jobs.Still,NACE found no big increase in graduateswho plan to stay in schooland avoid the job market.About twenty-seven percent saidthey plan to go to graduate school,compared to abouttwenty-four percent a year ago.Engineering and accounting graduateswere more likely to have startedtheir job search alreadyand to have accepted a job.These are among the best paid professionsfor people with just a college degree.On average,engineering majors expect to startat about sixty-two thousand dollars a year.Accounting majors expectabout forty-five thousand.So how can students increasetheir chances for a job?Mimi Collins at NACE saysthe most effective tool is a school'scareer counseling center.Counselors can help studentswith job applicationsand preparing for interviews.They also let students knowabout job openings and eventslike job recruitment fairs.They can also help first-year studentsdecide what to study.Another way to look for a jobis to do an internship.This is when a student gets experiencein a position that may or may not be paid.The latest NACE survey foundthat seventy-three percent of graduateswho did get jobs had completed an internship.The group reported in Marchthat employers expected to increasehourly wage offers for college internsby five percent from last year.But,because of the economy,employers reduced the number of internshipsavailable by twenty-one percent.And that's the VOA Special EnglishEducation Report,written by Nancy Steinbach.You can find our Foreign Student Serieson studying in the United Statesat www.51voa.com.
